Moritzplatz - before the intervention

Working process at Moritzplatz

The site-specific installation “The Grass Is Always Greener On The Other Side” was creat- ed as a contribution to the 2016 “Circumstances” exhibition, which focused on Moritzplatz in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Today it is difficult to imagine how different this place looked in the Golden Twenties, when it was one of the most important and lively places in Berlin, fre- quented by streetcars and horse-drawn carriages. It was only after the Second World War that the traffic circle was created on which Jeewi Lee realized her artistic intervention. In “The Grass Is Always Greener On The Other Side,” the artist focused on this dividing ele- ment in road traffic and symbolically reconnected Prinzenstraße, which is separated by the roundabout even to this day. Lee’s installation referred to a historical photograph that showed a street running along this very axis. Using lawn paint of the type used in arid re- gions of the United States to give the impression of immaculately manicured front yards, she allowed a past from not long ago to become visible. The artist's deep green line and

the work’s ambiguous title also refer to the history of German division that manifested itself in the immediate vicinity of Moritzplatz, where the Berlin Wall and a border crossing be- tween Prinzenstraße and Heinrich-Heine-Straße once stood.
