Weisse Erde

White soil

2015, installation, salt, adhesive, variable dimensions

Installation view, Arndt Gallery Berlin, 2015

As part of her solo exhibition Sediment, Jeewi Lee created a site-specific installation within the gallery space (Rauminstallation) called Weisse Erde (White Soil). For this, she ‘conserved’ the white cube with filtered sea salt from her home in South Korea. Like water, this white gold, an ionic chemical compound, constitutes one of the essential elements of human life. Salt is a residue, a trace of seawater and sunshine. Physically tangible, it covered the walls and floor of the gallery space, thus drawing attention to its crystalline surface structure as it refracted the light into an ever-changing range of colours. Lee herself compares the wall to an archive upon which the past has been inscribed.
